Migrants, forced or voluntary contribute the vibrancy, growth and quality of life a city can offer. Jamaica’s long-term development plan, Vision 2030 Jamaica– National Development Plan recognizes that in an environment characterized by high levels of crime and violence and inequitable dispensation of justice, citizens and migrants are alienated and less productive than they might be, and are more likely to engage in destructive behaviour. This fuels a vicious cycle that militates against achievement of positive social, economic and cultural outcomes. Policy alignment and strategic actions specific to migration being facilitated by the Government of Jamaica, establishes the importance of cities that are safe, respects the rights of all, operates with a sense of shared values and offers justice and fair play in the eyes of its citizens and migrants. The vision statement of making “Jamaica, the place of choice to live, work, raise families and do business” is the starting point.

Actions Undertaken:

• Tabling of the National Policy on International Migration and Development in Jamaican Parliament in June 2017
• Plan of Action in support of the rehabilitation and reintegration of forced returnees/involuntary returned migrants
• Establishment of a National Working Group on International Migration and Development (NWGIMD)
• Facilitate partnerships and project initiatives to address migration and development issues at local levels
• Incorporation of technology to aid with the management of migration migrant data, enabling stakeholders to make informed decisions
