GFMD 2013: A Year in Review

2013 proved to be an event-packed year for the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD), even in the absence of the annual summit meeting for the first time since its inception in 2007.

With the overarching theme, “Unlocking the Potential of Migration for Inclusive Development”,  Sweden as GFMD Chair-in-Office spearheads the 18-month preparatory process that engages all UN Member States, GFMD Observers, the civil society and other non-government stakeholders,  culminating in a final meeting in Stockholm on 14-16 May 2014.

Under the leadership of Amb. Eva Åkerman Börje, Sweden aims to make the Global Forum more inclusive, more development-focused, more dynamic and more durable. Sweden is seizing the opportunity to lead the process in order to enhance and make the work of GFMD even more relevant.

The following provides an overview of the key activities and highlights of the GFMD in 2013:

In addition, three rounds of meetings of the Government Roundtable teams were organized in May, September and November to discuss the background paper and prepare for the GFMD Roundtable sessions to be held at the final meeting in May in Stockholm.

During the year, Ambassador Eva Åkerman Börje was also invited to give the GFMD perspectives on various related events. (view Chair’s presentations/statements here)

As 2014 begins, the GFMD prepares for the last round of GFMD meetings in Geneva on 11-13 March and eagerly awaits the GFMD 2014 Forum Meeting to be held on 14-16 May in Stockholm.
