GIZ ran a pilot program from 2007 to 2010 to support non-profit projects by registered migrant associations in their countries of origin. The program – besides its local poverty-reducing effects on the target group in the partner countries – had the objective to foster the development of synergetic cooperative structures between the governmental development cooperation agency GIZ and migrant associations in Germany that engage in their respective countries of origin.
The GIZ Pilot Program for non-profit projects of migrant associations in Germany was specifically referred upon in the context of Roundtable 1.2 on "Empowering Migrants and Diaspora to Contribute to Development" (in 2008). Moreover the Program has links to various discussions that have taken place during subsequent GFMD meetings, in particular during the following roundtable-sessions:

More generally the program also corresponds to the flagship theme “Taking action on Migration and Development – Coherence, Capacity and Cooperation”, as it targets particularly cooperation but in parts also capacity.
