Summary:

UNICEF's 'Children Uprooted' campaign is a broad communications campaign focusing on refugee and migrant children. As part of this campaign, UNICEF has urged governments and partners to realize a Six-Point Agenda For Action to:

  • Protect children on the move from violence, abuse and exploitation.
  • End the immigration detention of children.
  • Keep families together and give children legal status.
  • Keep every refugee, migrant and IDP child learning and give them access to health and other quality services.
  • Address the underlying causes that uproot children from their homes.
  • Promote measures to combat xenophobia and discrimination.

The campaign includes the release of a number of reports and commentaties exploring the current challenges to migrant children's rights and suggesting action to improve conditions for children on the move, and the active participation of UNICEF in conferences and meetings on this issue.

The campaign has also included a number of other communication methods, including:

  • The release of a number of Youtube videos focused on migrant children's rights. Some videos are educational (providing information on, e.g. relevant international law, push and pull factors affecting children) or provide situational updates on migration issues affecting children, while others tell the personal stories of migrant children.
  • Podcasts, including interviews with experts.
  • In some countries, educational materials for primary and secondary school students to raise awareness and knowledge of children's rights and the specific experiences of children who have been uprooted from their homes (video and classroom discussion).
  • The publications of stories and photo essays providing insight into the personal stories of children on the move and their families.
